  7. Hello Joy. First of all let me congratulate you on this photo shoot. I just got my magazine today and was amazed at the quality of the photos. You looked beautiful and very classy.

The thing I’ll say next doesn’t have to do with the content of your post but I didn’t know where else to post it so I figured choosing the latest entry would be the best thing to do. I’ve been watching One Tree Hill for about 3 years now and I’ve always enjoyed some of the messages the show has been able to send. It's messages like some of the ones I’ve seen that I want my daughter to watch some day on television. Of course the show has also had some baffling, outrageous and sexist messages spread out there (one that’s still pretty bright in my mind is the little hints that it was Haley’s fault that Jamie called nanny Carrie ‘mom’ because she was a working mom – again, BAFFLING – and that it was Haley’s fault that Nathan started ogling the nanny because she didn’t pay too much attention to him. As a young woman and a mother myself I find messages like that beyond insulting) but I tend to ignore those moments and focus on the good stuff.

I’ve recently come across one of your statements from the “Evening with OTH” event (I guess it was this one but I’m not sure) where you said the ‘pot brownies episode’ was one of your favorites. Granted it was an okay episode with some interesting scenes and storylines, I keep dwindling on why this was one of your favorite episodes. You’re obviously entitled to have your own opinion and I don’t want to take it away from you or diminish it but I must say that was one of the episodes of the show that bothered me the most. As someone who has had to waste a good deal of her life dealing with stoner relatives and had to watch someone I care about throw his life away on pot, I am utterly appalled that there's anybody out there who still thinks smoking pot is funny. Nowadays, maybe this makes me uncool but there's nothing funny about it. Now I know you’re an actress and actors do have a reputation for smoking and doing all kinds of crazy things so maybe being in that environment “softens” your perception of drug-related issues? Maybe, I don’ know. Aside from alcohol, OTH has never really shown (much less ENCOURAGED) drug use. Quinn telling Haley, "you've had a hard week, you deserve to get high" is not a message I'd want my kids to hear and they certainly will not get near this episode for that. I was perplexed how these writers thought that this was okay to write and to air to young women (the show’s main target)! Maybe I’m old-fashioned but I really don’t understand why and how in the 21st century, when we know all the dangers and devastating consequences drugs have (despite how heavy or light they are –they’re still drugs!), people still choose to smoke and to get high. Do they think being high is worth all the awful things drugs do to our body or do they just like to hurt themselves? It’s even more appalling when tv shows that should set an example talk about this issue like it was no big deal and tell young adults all over the world that “it’s okay to get high because you had a bad day”. ????

I guess I’d just like to hear your thoughts on this since you’ve said this was one of your favorite episodes and seemed to think there was nothing wrong with it. I obviously don’t know the reasons why you said what you did and maybe just shooting it and that different side of Haley was a lot funnier than usual but I’m not sure. The reason why I’m even posting this is because I’ve been following your blog posts and you seem like a really open-minded person and you don’t seem to ignore people just because they have a different opinion than you. I think it’d be an interesting theme to discuss and I’d love to hear your thoughts about this.

Thank you for your time. From a concerned mother,

    Rebecca.

  13. Oh, Joy! I bought the digital copy of Zooey Magazine last week and I was seriously blown away by the pictures. You look stunning as always.

I love the teaser video, your personality really comes through in the photos.

Timeless, classic, natural, 100% true beauty. :)

  14. Oh, and I have to add that your new header is perfect. That photo has been my desktop background ever since I first saw the picture.

You are my inspiration to be true to who I am, every day. True beauty comes from within.

  15. You know you see some actresses/singers etc who have careers as well as families and it seems kind of put together; the differing facets of their personalities seemingly at odds with each other. Having read a lot of your posts and watching the teaser, I find that you buck the trend; you, and a small minority of those seen on the large/silver screen, show how one side of you flows into the next and that which follows seamlessly into the next only cements my theory that in you, all these facets are one. And like the great saying goes "The whole is greater than the sum of the parts." You represent this so well and truthfully. You are credit to your beginning and your life's journey. I think your wonderful. xx

  16. Very fun video! It's really nice the Director made it appear..dear, how to say it and have it be the compliment that I mean for it to be..more "cliplike"? Sorry, is that an ouch? To me it was an artist's director's view of raising the bar of home movies. There. I've either saved myself :)or hopelessly offended ;( your Director and if I did I apologize because the video is great!

Do you know if you can buy the magazine in Sweden? :D

  27. Love this, Joy! You look absolutely gorgeous, and here's why I love you to pieces. You seem like such a normal girl ... not this famous movie star at all. Just someone who, if we came from the same country or culture or time or whatever, ... I could be really good friends with. I love that about you. Most celebrities come across so snooty and never interact with their fans. I love that you allow us to be a small part of your life each day! Keep doing your thing! You and Maria look sooo adorable together! Any chance we can see some lovey dovey pics with you and Mikes? lol

Loooove your header photo too, btw! Gorgeous clothes, and just a very nice shot!

  28. Rebecca, I just saw your entry above and I felt compelled to respond even though it was directed at Joy. I hope you won't mind that put my 2cents out there.

First thing I'd like to say is that Joy doesn't write the story lines feature on OTH so she can't be held responsible for what other characters, or even her own character, say.

I also work in Entertainment (in Europe) and I don't do drugs at all. I smoked weed twice -- once when I was in college and once when I visited Amsterdam for the weekend. Both times had nothing to do with work. I did it out of curiosity (and the fact that when compared to other drugs weed is perhaps a lesser evil) rather than any real interest in drugs. I've never tried any other drugs before or since, nor am I interested to because I wasn't brought up thinking drugs are okay.

So this idea that ALL actors and actresses are druggies is a bit misinformed. Yes, drugs is an issue in the Entertainment business, perhaps especially in the United States, but it's not something every entertainer feel they must do.

Secondly, I've read interviews where Joy has said that there are aspects of OTH that she doesn't agree with. I don't remember the Brownie episode, but I'm sure if Joy said it was her favourite it wasn't because the episode had some hidden message of supporting drug use.

Like I said above in my own post before I saw your comment, Joy is one of the most likable celebrity I've ever come across. In fact, she doesn't seem like a celebrity at all. If you didn't know she was on OTH or that she was an actress it'd be very easy to mistake her as just another pretty girl who likes blogging about the things that interest her. She doesn't go around touting her own horn or being all hype. I think she's very down to earth and normal, and I love that about her.

When it comes to OTH and its message, for argument's sake I'm going to say it can go both ways. For example, while I love Haley (she and Nathan were the reason I watched and continue to watch the show) I didn't always like how they portrayed Nathan as the one half of the relationship that's always screwing up. It was like Haley was a saint. She could do no wrong and Nathan had to be the one grovelling after her every time. I didn't really care for that. In later years there's been more of a balance, but in earlier years the guys weren't portrayed in a particularly good light, imo. And while I know teenage boys can be punks, I also know plenty others who aren't.

Also don't forget where the show's coming from. Schwann meant for this show to be about 2 brothers coming of age ... but the show evolved beyond that donkey years ago. It has become very female centric, esp after it went over to the CW, a channel that favour shows with female leads. Of course, nothing wrong with that. I think it's great because they're hardly enough positive, 3-dimensional portrayals of women on TV. So, yeah, my point is that the show isn't as it started out. That core theme of the Scott brotherhood disappeared long before Lucas even left. Now you can hardly the say the show is even about brotherhood. The show is more focused on the girls, with the guys playing supportive roles almost.

For me, it's all good though because aside from Nathan I don't really care for the guys on OTH. I never really cared for Lucas in the first place (apologies to the fans!) and Julian, Clay and Chase are boring and uninteresting (to me). Don't shoot me, guys!

At the end of the day, it's not up to celebrities to teach our kids right from wrong. That's the job of the parent. Personally I think Joy is a great role model. She's wholesome and genuine. Without being pushy and or preachy she promotes values that I espouse and which I believe other young women can and do benefit from.

  32. the thing with this person's comment above. . .I will say I finally saw all the episodes of OTH (I'm up to date now) and that episode did bother me. . .but mainly I think it doesn't represent godliness too well as people who love and serve God, we should be careful how we portray ourselves or those we act as, don't you think? But anyway, I don't really believe their comment was done really in the best taste, but I can understand their concern. Someone who might be a big fan of yours and not know that you claim to be a follower of Christ, might think "Haley had weed in her brownies, it's okay if I do." Now I know that is a little absurd for one to do that, but sometimes young minds (who really shouldn't watch the show as it is) might react that way. . .If your daughter ever watches the show one day I know you'd explain things to her, but there are a lot of children who have uninvolved parents and only feed in what the shows and media portray. Now I don't know your heart, and God does. I didn't even REALLY know you when I talked to you those tiny bits in high school, so really I am not one who can try to encourage you on a personal level, and then again neither is the girl who originally posted what she did. By the way you haven't aged since 1999.

About this specific post, you look gorgeous in these shots and I didn't have time to see the video, and am sorry for that.
