Curl Me Up, Buttercup!

Ok, I've been getting a lot of requests to do another hair blog.
Thought I'd show you guys how to do a vintage/retro 'do...

Start with your hair blown out.

You'll need:
A medium barrel, high-quality curling iron
A few metal clips to hold curls in place for shape
A teasing comb
Hairspray

One) Pin hair back behind the "tucked" ear with a hidden bobby pin
Two) Copy my iron placement and wrap hair almost fully around the barrel once.
Three) Keep the shape of the curl by rolling it up.

Four) Pin the curl "forward" rather than the natural instinct to go "backward".

Five) Move on to the front section. Tease just under the top layer for height. Then, lift the top layer and copy my iron placement in the photos. Do not adjust the way you are holding your hair as you wrap. You're not looking for a smooth curl around the barrel, rather, you want to allow the hair to twist naturally into itself as you wrap around the iron.

Six) Maintaining the shape of the curl, pin up the top section. Again, pin "under" so as to lift the base of the top part.

Seven) Take the second section on the same side and copy my iron placement. Remember not to adjust your hold on the end of your hair. Let your hair twist naturally as you curl.

Eight) Pin this section up in the traditional "backwards" way-- the opposite of what you did on the other side that is tucked.
Nine) Curl & pin the third section in the same way as the prior two.

Ten) Give it a good spray and let it sit for a while.

VOILA!

  2. Hey Joy,
I love this hair do & I'm SO excited to try it soon....I love your hair blogs b/c your style is exactly what I like classy and vintage. Do the curls hold as well with long hair? Or is this hair style mostly designed for a shorter length? My hair is VERY long and I was wondering if the curls would hold like they do with you length? I LOVE IT & I'm definitely going to be trying this for the holidays! Thank You SO much for the update!

Could you possibly do a blog on a great holiday makeup look that's natural but,has the red lips and a nice shimmer eye shadow for the holidays? You ALWAYS have the style and the best look that I love the most. If you could do a makeup holiday blog that would be GREATLY appreciated! You look gorgeous as ALWAYS!!! Thank You!!!
    Love,
    Melanie XOXO

  6. Love. Love. LOVE. Though I do suck with hair and will probably fail miserably at this, I am still going to give it a shot.

It'd be awesome/helpful if you could do videos in the future, too. That way people can see all of the steps and go back and watch over and over [okay, mostly for people like me who, again, suck at doing hair *wink*]

    Thanks girl! Xo

  8. JOY!
Amazing that you yourself can be so fantastic comb my hair. Your hair looks great here!
Thank you that you describe it step by step and you even add to this picture, it really helps me when I will do the same with my hair. I have slightly longer hair and I'm not sure if the effect will be equally satisfactory. But I hope so. I love retro and vintage style. Fantastic in that I feel and find the true myself.
And I think it's a great idea to add such practical advice on how to comb hair or how to make a particular hairstyle.
I'd be grateful if you add an interesting styling hair for a little longer hair, but in a similar style. Maybe you have any advice as to the care of long, thick hair, I'm happy to read.

And your pics are awesome, you're so BEAUTIFUL! xo Natalia

  17. Hey Joy,

I just tried to do this vintage hair style, but it's a floop with my hair, they are too short so I don't succeed to do beautiful curls :(
But thank you for these advices, I will try again when my hair will be longer ! :)
