1 Were You Named After Anyone? I was named after Sophia Loren. My father is a photographer, and when I was born he was frequently doing photoshoots with her. Both of my parents adore her, and loved her spunk, elegance, and unique femininity. Plus it's a very traditional Italian name. They wanted to honor my heritage, and inspire those qualities in me. I loved hearing as a child that I was named after such a special lady.

2 Do You Like Your Own Handwriting? Actually, I'm not really a fan of my handwriting. My mother has the most gorgeous penmanship I've ever seen, and my writing is more of a chicken scratch. I generally write in all capital letters so that people stand a chance!

3 What Would Your Superpower be if you could choose one? It's a tie for me. I'd love to be able to fly, so that I could get anywhere in an instant, and have a zero carbon footprint when I travel. But I'd also love it if I never had to sleep. Can you imagine what could be done if you could use all 24 hours in every day!?

4 Are you an Optimist or Pessimist?

I am an eternal optimist. So much so that I get incredibly worked up over injustice and inequality. I believe in the good in people and the world. And I really believe that if our youth mobilize to be a force of equality, and a contingency of caring souls, we can truly change the world. I know that is incredibly optimistic, but I believe it down to the core of my being.

5 What do you collect?

I collect vintage cameras. I have a few that are incredibly old, and so beautiful. They're both a nod to my family and to the beauty & panache of Old Hollywood. Movie magic, the inspiration I find in photographs, it all begins with a camera.

6 What movie would your friends be surprised that you like?

The last truly great movie that I saw was Gasland. It's a documentary about how hydraulic fracturing is affecting our environment and our fresh water supply. Although I doubt that surprises anyone!

7 What are your favorite smells?

I love the smell of night blooming jasmine. It was planted in window boxes outside my bedroom as a little girl, and it carried me into my dreams every night. Also, I love the smell of olive oil, and the scent of fresh basil. That's the Italian in me!

8 Coffee or Tea? Both. If I'm drinking coffee, I'll have an Americano, or take it iced. As for tea, green tea in any oolong variation does the trick.

9 Wine or Beer? I love good wine -- again, I'm Italian! -- but I also adore good beer. If I'm drinking red, I always go for Malbec. And if it's a beer night, Shotgun Betty. Stella Artois and Fat Tire rank right up there as well.

10 What is the best thing you've ever eaten? (Where?)

The best thing I've ever eaten is handmade, fresh truffle gnudie at Wine & Roses in New York. It's so incredible that I don't even know how to describe it. It's a like a rainbow exploding in your mouth. Heaven.

11 Mac or PC? Mac. iMiss Steve Jobs.

12 What are you listening to right now?

I'm listening to a lot of Wolf Gang, Editors, Florence + The Machine, Jay Z, Band of Skulls, and Crash Kings lately. And Stevie Wonder. Always Stevie Wonder.

13 What career would you pursue in another life?

I daydream about being Robin to Anderson Cooper's Batman. Traveling the world covering breaking news, visiting frontlines, and of course shooting photographs. And about doing a talk show show like ELLEN. Who knows, one of those things might happen in this lifetime...

14 What sound or noise to you love?

I love the sound of laughter. Real, uncontrollable laughter. And live music.

15 What sound or noise do you hate?

I hate the sound of my alarm clock whenever it goes off before the sun is up. That happens far too often.

16 Mountains or Beach? Mountains. I love the smell of the woods. I love the perspective you get when climbing to a new height, and literally seeing your world from a new vantage point. Mountains that overlook the beach are a bonus.

17 Cook or Bake? I cook a lot. I need to start baking more. My mom makes an incredible raspberry pie, so I have good jumping off point.

18 Do you go to restaurants and movies by yourself?

I do! And I love it. There's something wonderful about enjoying a meal, or a piece of art or entertainment alone. Being silent and relaxing with your own thoughts. I get a lot of my best thinking done in those situations.

19 What is your favorite fairy tale or childhood story?

Goodnight Moon and The Giving Tree are two of my favorite stories from my childhood. They're both beautiful.

20 What would you tell the 13 year old you?

I'd say, "Don't worry about the ones who say you're weird. Who call you names and push you around and try to break you down. They only do it because they're broken. Keep your head up. Shoot for the moon. Believe in the power of your voice and your passion. Don't wait so long to start using your platform for fear that you wont be able to make a difference. You WILL. And girl! Relish, even more, in school. It is a supreme privilege to have your only job in life be to get smarter every day. After all, #SmartIsSexy, and it's the only kind of sexy that lasts."
I've known Sophia closely for almost 10 years and I can honestly say she is one of the lovliest and smartest women I know. She is deeply sensitive and compassionate and an absolute fanatic about defending the undefended. We have laughed & cried together and laughed until we've cried together, gossiped about and to each other, fought with and for each other, sat on rooftops together, watched the sun come up with strong cups of coffee together, said terrible things and beautiful things to each other, borrowed clothes, gone shopping, eaten amazing food, cooked and drank together... and through it all we have survived as the two old broads of One Tree Hill, closer than ever and ready to move on to greener professional pastures.

If you know anything about Sophia, it's hard to miss her passion for all things philanthropic (she is a major advocate for Global Green) and her passion for women's rights (she is currently working on a piece for Marie Claire magazine about the treatment of women in Afghanistan). To find out more about Ms. Bush, your best bet is to visit her WEBSITE, follow her on TWITTER and check her out on IMDB for her latest projects as an actress and director.

  7. Thank you to both you and Sophia for this closer look at her. I really do love these twenty questions entries because it allows the opportunity to get to know the real person a little and that's so wonderful.

As sad as it makes me to see OTH go, I'm thankful to both of you and everyone else for signing on for season 9. No one (at least I hope because I sure wouldn't) would blame anyone in the cast if they hadn't come back.

I'm looking forward to seeing the last episodes ever of OTH play out (hurry up January) and to what is awaiting you, Sophia and everyone else in those greener pastures. Wherever you guys go, whatever you do, you have a fan in me.

I'm going to end this now before I burst into tears.

    Much love to you guys

  10. Wow, this warms my heart so much! Makes me see and miss the beauty in my own friendships that have been so close and now that I've moved away it's harder. How do those friendships survive? How do they last? It's about loving one another through thick and thin. As you've said the times when you've said terrible things about each other, laughed together, cried together and still came out loving the other for who they are. Thank you for providing us with 9+ years of awesome on screen friendships, and giving us a glimpse of that off screen friendship you have been blessed with! We love you both and are glad to have people in the publics eye to look up to and gain knowledge from!

  11. This is one of the best 20 questions. I fell in love with Sophia on One Tree Hill but once i got to know her outside of her "Brooke Davis" character, I fell in love all over again. She inspires me to take charge and defend the undefended. She makes us realize that we have a voice for a reason and we can make our voice heard. I envy your friendship with her, but I love both of you for being such wonderful examples of what women should strive to be.
    As always, thank you.

  12. Sophia reminds me of the spirit I had before I finished my politics degree. I was the eternal optimist who believed that the goodness in people would change the world...I miss that feeling. :(

I have the UTMOST RESPECT for her passion to change the world. I've always been weary of actors/actresses who lend their name to a cause because I know it's for dual publicity - the celeb and the organization; however, you can easily see that her passion is real. That's truly special and rare in this world (especially the fake world known as Hollywood).

I have to admit that I wasn't a big Sophia fan until recently. And by recently, I mean when she joined Twitter. I guess I just didn't care enough to get to know the girl behind "Brooke Davis", and I have to admit that the more I have learned about her via Twitter and interviews like this one, the more I can see that this girl is a gem. She actually is smart and not the Hollywood version of smart where she can say a few fancy words and then acts like a complete idiot for the cameras. She's smart in the way that counts and in a way that truly makes a difference.

I wish I had her to look up to when I was a little girl trying to find my path in the world. All of you ladies on One Tree Hill seem so genuine with the image that you portray to the public. You're all either AMAZING actresses or just really fantastic people. I'm hoping and believing it's the latter.

    xoxo,
    Stephanie

  47. i have to say when oth first came out, i kind of associated sophia with how her character was originally kind of b*tchy, but i have to say that since then my view of her has totally changed. through everything she had to deal with, with her personal life being in such a huge spotlight years back, i have nothing but major respect for the classy way she has always held herself and the way she did not let her personal issues affect her job performance, especially in light of the fact that on and off-screen were so closely tied together. it can't have been easy, but she makes being classy look effortless. SO well done, truly.

  50. Dear Bethany, I've been on your website many times but have never posted a comment on anything, but as i saw this i knew i had to post something.
I will always love One Tree Hill. None of my friends understand why i'm so passionate about the show and why i love it so much. I mean its just a show, what is there to love about it, but its not "just a show" but a show that means the world to me. I've had terrible yelling's at the TV, for the stupidness of Peyton, Nathan, Lucas, Brooke or Haley, or that terrible time I wouldn't watch any OTH because Brucas broke up and i was so sad by it, or the way Braley or Brucas never had scenes anymore, or how Brathan never became friends like i wanted them to, but even then i always came back, even if i didn't agree with some of the couples or anything else. OTH is were my soul is, i've tried to replace it because how angry i am at times but it never works. Now that OTH is ending, and is soon to be over a bitter, sad feeling has come upon me, in the realization that there will never be a new season of the characters i have watched grow over the years.

I had come to an realization that by watching that show i had come to many understandings in life, and come to appreciate the friends and family i have. I will never be able to explain what your show has brought me, and helped me with. From being cheated by my boyfriend, from being scared to love, or be loved, from a terrible father, and lovable mother. From no friends to some. You guys have gave me hope.

Reading this interview has really touched my heart. I had never thought you two were such close friends. To me it seems as if you are best friends. And in reality i hope you are. I know that you two are friends on set and outside of set, and when you walk away - from the place you two always saw each other- its hard to keep in contact with one another. I hope that your friendship stays strong and that you have many more memories to come. That you stand next to each other in time of need and are there for each other when its a beautiful magical time. I hope you never forget what you had and that when you do go away you are both able to see each other and spend time with each other. As it seems to me that your friendship is rare, its raw and real and beautiful and i hope its never lost and always there.

Thank you, the both of you, for inspiring me to strive for what i want, to let me believe I am loved and appreciated, for giving me amazing fashion taste, for now showing me what true friendship is, and making me believe in me, and for fighting for the world around us.
This interview with Sophia is amazing, and precious and one of the most amazing one's you have done, you two are the most beautiful and amazing people I "know." i wish you all the best in the future, and in life. And that you are forever friends and always living a happy life.

Thank you so much, from the bottom of my heart

  53. Hey joy!

You have no idea how much I love this post. I.LOVE.IT. You and Sophia are truly an inspiration to young women like me. For the longest time I wanted to do something for my self but, either I couldn't find the time or sometimes, feeling guilty and selfish for doing it so I never tried. But you guys inspired me to follow my dream. Do what I think is best for me without thinking what somebody else might say. Volunteering to orphanages and such, doing something for the less fortunate. You have no idea how much of that I got the idea from you guys. Over the years, taught me to love myself a little more but in some ways, to love myself a little less too. It's like for the past nine years I've been a part of your lives. and that, you are part of mine too. I don't want season9 to start. Because if it did, It means it'll soon end. It can be a little selfish but I don't want it to. But I know you need to move on with your lives. Doing something different and amazing is what you all deserve. It will be hard to let you go. I'm wishing to meet you someday. You,Sophia and Maria, your daughter, and Michael too. I know it's close to impossible given that I am here in the Philippines and you are there. I don't know how and when, but I am not losing hope. Maybe one day. I hope you won't stop blogging. This is the only way to have, in some way a connection to you after the series.

I wish you all the best. You deserve it. Continue to be an inspiration. I love you. God bless you and your entire family.

  63. hi you always ask other people in your 20 questions if the go to restaurants and movies by themselves, this is something I had never thought about doing. I wondered if you go to the "pictures" we call it over the pond, I'm from Scotland, by yourself and if you enjoy it. I love going to the cinema but with 2 small children and both myself and husband working shifts, the only films we see are kids ones. Having said that Toy story 3 and Despicable Me were really funny x

  64. WOW ... call it postpartum emotions or just being a huge fan of both you ladies - but this post brought me to tears. You ladies are so blessed to have each other and I pray that your friendship continues after OTH, which I'm sure it will.

It's a rare occasion someone can and will speak so eloquently about a friend/co-worker and actually mean it. You ladies are both so amazing. THANK YOU for just being YOU! And Thank you Joy for posting this with Sophia's help!

  72. I am Fanfan from Paris, France, your age. I want to say thank you for my favorite show OTH, for your part in it, for this blog and everything you share, I am in awe of everything that you do and it always reminds me to do more. My two favorite characters of the show are Haley and Brooke because they show strength and resilience as well as honesty and vulnerability and how to make choices and grow as a woman. And they are portrayed by two fantastic actresses and I believe human beings, cause it shows... Thank you also Bethany Joy for your beautiful music, I rejoice in making people listen and notice it here in France. THANK YOU
